Recipe: Something Out of Nothing “Noodle Edition”

Super Storm Sandy (Triple S since we’ve shared intimate moments together), has taught a few of us some valuable lessons about survival. Outside of always having working flashlights and knowing where they are, we always have to remember to keep our phones charged, download as many news apps as possible, and last, but certainly not least, have noodles handy. I thank the heavens that I was one of the fortunate ones whoonly lost power for a few hours Tuesday night and woke up to my tv being on. However, had it not been for noodles, a gas stove and knowing my way around the kitchen; Triple S would have been the reason I dropped a few pounds :-)

This Thursday’s recipe is dedicated to how to make something out of nothing — Triple S Style. I’ve collected few recipes to help you survive the next natural disaster, because as well all know, everybody eats B.

Veggie Noodle Stew- A recipe my oldest nephew concocted

Ingredients:

  • Salt
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)
  • Butter
  • Mixed Vegetables (or any vegetables you have around the house)
  • Egg Noodles (or any pasta like substance in the house)
  • Water

Directions

  1. Bring a pot of water to boil, adding salt and a splash of EVOO.
  2. Once boiled, add your noodles and mixed vegetables.
  3. Once everything is cooked, about 10 – 15 minutes, drain the water and return to pot.
  4. Add butter and salt to taste

Pepper Pasta!- A recipe from my aunt

Ingredients:

  • Salt
  • EVOO
  • Tomato Sauce (I like the chunky tomatoes in basil and herbs)
  • Spaghetti (or your noodle of choice)
  • Sriracha (or any other spices you’d like to add)
  • Water

Directions

  1. Bring a pot of water to boil, adding salt and a splash of EVOO.
  2. In another pan, start to stew your tomatoes ( put the pan on a low blaze with a bit of EVOO at the bottom )
  3. Get your chef on and add your Sriracha and any other herbs and spices you want to add to your sauce.
  4. Once the pasta is ready ( about 7-8 minutes ), drain and add to the tomato sauce.
  5. Toss and coat the noodles.

S’ghetti (fan favorite)- A recipe that my mom has perfected, but for the purposes of survival, we’re cutting out some of the good stuff, including, but not limited to: Garlic Bread, Green Peppers, Onions, etc.

Ingredients:

  • Salt
  • EVOO
  • Tomato Sauce (meat flavored, 3 cheese, or whatever you have in your house)
  • Ground Beef (or Turkey, or Chicken or whatever meat is thawing the fastest since your fridge may have lost power)
  • Spices
  • Water

Directions

  1. Bring a pot of water to boil, adding salt and a splash of EVOO.
  2. Once boiled add pasta. (Cooking time approx. 7-8 minutes)
  3. In a pan, cook your meat adding whichever seasoning you wish (Lawry’s, cayenne, paprika, onion and garlic powders are some of my personal favorites).
  4. Once pasta is cooked, drain pasta and add the pasta back to the pot.
  5. Once meat is cooked, drain and add to pasta pot.
  6. Pour in your sauce over pasta & meat dish – warm throughout.

Bon Appetit!

I hope you guys enjoy these easy, low cost, ‘making something out of nothing ‘ meals. Also, I’ve tried all of these dishes and they’re Brooklyn’s Sweetheart approved. If you have the flexibility, add some cheese, fresh herbs and spices or whatever else you need to beef it up, no pun intended.
