Introducing Sabrina…

Formal introductions and first impressions always make my nerves bad.  I am going to make this short and sweet.  I am a 26 year old, single, black female coming to you Straight Outta Compton. Just kidding. I was raised in Pasadena, CA, no siblings, single mother household. I went to Mayfield Senior School, an all-girls private, Catholic high school, in a graduating class of 68 girls.  It was a dream I would willingly return to. In high school I played volleyball, water polo and was an All American Swimmer. I went to Smith College in Northampton, MA, another women’s institution. While I was there I studied Chemistry and African American Studies. After that I moved to New Orleans, LA; lived, worked and drank there for 3 years. Then I moved to San Diego, CA and lived there for a year. I moved to Los Angeles on 12/30/11 to start my new job at a nonprofit.

Being a black woman in America means the world to me. It’s the reason I studied AAS in undergrad and why I work at a nonprofit. My goal for writing for Dynamo is to bridge the gap between women of color. In this forum we can come together, discuss issues, find solutions and be the women we want to be surrounded by. Yes, it is a bit daunting but ‘Conquering Adversity’ is the name of the game. It is way past time for us as women to come together and love each other. If I could I would be an active part of every organization, magazine, club etc. whose mission is to build bonds of sisterhood and improve quality of life.  In the meantime, Dynamo will be my platform for change.

When I am not out trying to Change The World, I am still a woman of intelligence and power. I try to read 2 books a month. Nothing like a good old library card to expand your mind. Every week I get to the movies to escape the world. I eat and appreciate all types of foods. To satisfy that side of my pleasure sensors, I eat out and cook a lot. I recently discovered the power and peace inside of a good museum. And travel? There is so much out there that I have yet to see but I am looking forward to it. Love? Love is a front that is on the back burner for me right now. Maybe Dynamo can/will assist me with that arena. Life? In general I am learning as much as I can at all times. By surrounding myself with people who inspire me and constantly rising, I am steadily becoming the woman I want to be.

Finally I look forward to providing the readers of Dynamo with enlightening and useful information and food for thought. And even more, I am anxious for your feedback.

Love Always,

Sabrina B.
