Introducing Kara…

Who am I?

My name is Kara and I’m a Dynamo!  I am an almost 30 year old young woman, mother, wife, daughter, granddaughter, niece, sister and friend.  My posts will be about everything from education and politics to celebrity news and pop culture commentary.  I am a product of my upbringing, environment and experiences; the same as all of you and all of the above will influence the opinions I share here on Dynamo!

I grew up in a small town in MA.  It’s a pretty little town on the south shore of Boston where everything and everyone is pretty homogenous.  Yes, it’s your classic “rich white town” and I grew up on the street that was historically named “Brownsville” by the locals.  In other words, there were a good number of Black people on my street.  I always found it strange that everyone was concentrated on this one street. Needless to say, growing up as the only Black girl almost all the time was interesting; but it was all I knew.

I went to college at UMASS-Amherst a.k.a. “The Zoo” or “ZooMass”.  UMASS is where I first experienced culture shock and also where I came alive.  I learned so much about myself, others and how the world works.  There were surely highs and lows and there are some things I wish I would have done differently, but I am so thankful for all the many lessons I learned inside and mostly outside of the classroom.  I ended up being on the five year plan because I was doing a lot of exploring by taking classes just because they interested me (which also translated to more student loan debt – oops!).  I try not to sweat things like that too much though because if I graduated on time I would have never met the founder of Dynamo!

After graduating from UMASS, I worked for 2 years and then moved to the beautiful city of Chicago!  I moved to Chicago ½ for love and ½ for a Master of Public Health degree (but that’s another Dynamo discussion)!  After Chicago, I moved to the south, but not just any south; I moved to TEXAS!  It’s still a little weird for me to say that I live in Texas, but I’ve been here for almost 3 years now (and I’m even wearing a cowboy hat as I write this (whoa!) –it’s Texas spirit day at work because the rodeo has started).

Anyways, you will surely get to know me better by reading all of my posts!  There will be many parenthesis to come! :-)
